Synopsis
This documentary is the first of its kind in the world. Not first to have black women talk about relationship woes, but the first to show unadulterated truth being told in its rawest form. The title, The Awful Truth about Love is nothing less than an accurate description of the revelation giving by the participants about what the landscape of love looks like today.

We set out to open the eyes and minds of blacks across this country not for the purpose of sensational storytelling but for reconstructive dialogue in an effort to build new roads of communication so a possible fruitful future will exist of Black men and women.

African-Americans are losing ground when it comes to building strong relationships that unfold into strong families for the community which gives rise to a strong race. The percentage of divorcees among African-Americans is increasing yearly due to the lack of knowledge when choosing a suitable partner in the onset of a relationship. This documentary uncovers some disturbing reasons why black men and women aren’t choosing suitable life partners.

A recent study has shown that, African-American women will spend 22% of their lives with a spouse; that leaves a whopping 78% of life alone. Plainly speaking, an African-American woman’s chances of getting married after age 35 drops to 49%. In addition, to glorified images of beauty in the media, which has taken a toll on the mind state of what beauty is in the African-American community, mixed with the twentieth century surge of the independent single mothers and the working woman, in addition to the decrease of available black males due to incarceration, drugs and murders, the African-American woman's chances of finding a suitable black man to build a long lasting relationship with is staggering.

African-American women find themselves working not from 9 to 5 but from can’t see morning till can’t see night, why? Simple! When there’s no one to go home to then what’s the use of going home. Many single, educated, non-mothers are loading their daily calendars with activities all to numb away the pangs of a lonely life. In the absence of the black male the black women will achieve far greater things that they have never dreamed of with only their best girl friends to celebrate and no husband to kiss afterwards to tell them they have done well.

All hope isn’t lost. This documentary is a perfect opportunity for African-American women to regain their footing in the relationship department, by learning how to communicate with the black man of today. Not settle, but to understand that we are living in a different day. What The Awful Truth about Love documentary teaches is a new communication needs to be cultivated about how to proceed within these new societal guidelines.
